Beehive Charcoal Kilns Death Valley, California 17" x 23" $1,500. Hidden on the west side of Death Valley in the Panamint Mountains on the Mahogany Flats, these 25' high beehive kilns were built in 1877 by Chinese laborers. The kilns made charcoal from the local pinyon pines to fuel two silver-lead smelters in the Argus Range 25 miles away. They were only used for one year. The smell of charcoal still lingers inside the kilns.
